Will vasectomy change my testosterone levels?
Some men are concerned that their testosterone level will change after vasectomy. As you can see on the Vasectomy page, the procedure divides the vas deferens which has one, and only one, job: to transport sperm cells. Testosterone is made in the testicle but it is transported in the blood stream (not the vas deferens); vasectomy has no impact on testosterone levels.
What if I’m taking testosterone?
Testosterone (T) therapy inhibits sperm production by the testes. About 70% of men on T therapy for more than 1-2 years have no sperm in their semen. If you plan to continue long-term T therapy, consider undergoing semen analysis prior to vasectomy to determine necessity. As long as you remain on T therapy and do not add any other medications that stimulate sperm production, such as clomiphene or HCG, you are unlikely to show a return of sperm or cause a pregnancy after a negative sperm analysis. If you decide to discontinue T therapy or start another medication to prevent shrinkage of the testes, you should consider yourself fertile and use birth control.
How can I check if I am already sterile?
If you would like to determine whether there are sperm in your semen, you may purchase a home test kit, such as SpermCheck Fertility, online for about $40. You can also obtain a sperm check from us for $75 if you prefer.
Is a semen analysis required before vasectomy?
We do not require a semen test before vasectomy. If you want to proceed with vasectomy, regardless of T therapy use, we are willing to proceed as long as you complete the consultation (in-person or online) and understand the risks and benefits involved with having a vasectomy.
Where do I find information about sperm banking?
Most patients do not end up banking their sperm due to high cost associated with it, however; it is an important option to be aware of and consider in your decision to have a vasectomy. We recommend visiting the sperm bank directory to locate a sperm bank and find more information. One of the most affordable options we have found for you is Legacy Sperm Banking Company.
